Facing your self

Becoming aware of the layers that wrap your Authentic Self is an important stage – and an uncomfortable one. In the process, you have to face all the dimensions of your Ego Formed Self that you may prefer to hide, repress, and look away from. That is why growing takes much courage, the courage to face your Ego Formed Self. You must acknowledge the components your Ego Formed Self is made of, the things you have learned and accumulated along the years. Some of the concepts you have adopted might be painful to engage with, because they were formed in painful moments of your life. For example, one might carry an underlying ego concept that says “People hurt me; I should not open up to them”. This ego concept may have sprung from a trauma of abandonment by a partner, or the death of a close family member. It might have been an important psychological defence mechanism that served the individual at that point in time. However, we frequently continue to carry this defence mechanism and continue applying it to future events where it is no longer relevant or needed. With time, it has become a powerful ego concept making this person navigate his or her relationship with life through the filter of this view. This view is frequently not conscious and its impact is unknown to that person. And here comes your challenge: know thy self. Explore those aspects of your self and try to recognise and accept the existence of those layers. Remember, only that which has been recognised can be transcended. How are you expected to transcend something that you are not aware of? How can you let go of something that is working, unconsciously, from within your mind? Here, again, is a meaningful meeting point between psychology and spirituality. The first enables recognising the building blocks of your Ego Formed Self; the second invites you to transcend them. Together, they offer freedom.
